The countryside always feels much fresher than the big, chaotic city of Jakarta. Today I walked in Madiun, East Java.

Here the air is lighter and time seems to move at a slower pace. Slow living, some might say. I find myself breathing more easily here. I enjoyed this town more than I expected.

Today, I walked to a relative’s house. It’s an old house. The house so old that it could easily qualify for heritage status from the government. You can tell its age just by the architecture of it.

The building follows a very Javanese architectural style, something close to a joglo, though with more rooms added over time. It feels organic, like it grew along with the family rather than being strictly planned. The front area is wide and open, inviting people to sit, talk, or simply exist without purpose.

Standing there, I felt how different life can be when space is generous and history is allowed to stay. In Jakarta, every meter is negotiated. Here, the house doesn’t rush you. It lets you arrive slowly and maybe leave a little lighter than when you came.
