Teleskop

Telescope

The Hubble telescope has been in service since 1990 and has been the largest telescope to date, providing us with fantastic images of space. It has revolutionized our view of the universe and helped us to learn and understand things we could not even begin to imagine.

Now it is to be replaced by the James Webb telescope, which was named after an ex-NASA director. With a diameter of 6.5 meters and a cost of $10 billion, it is the largest telescope ever built.
Although the mirror is 3x the size of the Hubble telescope, it weighs 705kg, 120kg less, which is due to the materials used, such as the gold-coated beryllium.

It has a sun shield the size of a tennis court to protect the measuring instruments from harmful radiation.
Unlike the Hubble telescope, it will not measure visible light in the frequency range for humans but mainly in the infrared range.
As a result of which the field of application also changes, Hubble has become known for images of dying stars, James-Webb, is able to capture light from 13 billion years ago and should thus provide images of the formation or birth of stars. It should give more information about our history and maybe even about the Big Bang.
It is also said to help in the search for exoplanets.
According to Amber Straughtn, an astrophysicist at NASA, "We will soon be able to discover small, rocky planets and immediately determine whether life is possible on them." Not directly, because planets do not reflect enough light of their own accord, but when they pass stars, the telescope can detect them.

Tests

Until 2019, the new telescope will be repeatedly tested in a cold chamber so that it can unfold in space at -270°Celsius. Particularly critical is the mirror's folding device, which can cause problems such as joint clamping, lubricant malfunction, moisture can escape from the support frame and freeze on the camera lens, and so on.
As already mentioned, beryllium is used, it is particularly robust and light and is intended to avoid the problems mentioned.
The James Webb telescope, unlike the Hubble telescope, cannot be repaired because it is simply too far away.

This marks the beginning of a new era and we can look forward to new, breathtaking pictures!
