Charles and Anna were a happy couple. They loved, respected, and supported each other. They had a quiet and routine life, but they lacked nothing. The only thing they looked forward to was sharing a cup of coffee every morning.
Charles was a coffee lover. He liked its aroma, its taste, its warmth. It made him feel awake, active, and optimistic. Anna knew this, and that's why she lovingly prepared a cup of coffee for him every day. But there was something that Charles did not know: Anna did not like coffee.
Actually, it wasn't that she didn't like it, but rather that in her family it was customary to drink any infusion and not coffee. She never got to try coffee and it never occurred to her to do so out of curiosity.
Ever since she met Charles she knew that he loved coffee, that it was a sacred ceremony, drinking it when he woke up to start the day with optimism and energy. This led her to make the decision not to tell him that she did not drink coffee, she did not want to upset him, she wanted to share this sacred moment with him.
So, for ten years, Anna pretended to like coffee. Every morning she would make coffee for Charles, serve it to him in his favorite cup, and for her cup, she would put a dark liquid that looked like coffee in it to fool her husband. Years went by and Charles never realized it until the day came.
One sunny morning Charles woke up and as usual, saw that his wife was not in bed. He thought she was preparing the morning coffee and ran to the kitchen to kiss her good morning and drink her delicious coffee.
When he got to the kitchen, he saw that there were two nice mugs on the table. This time he didn't want to drink from his favorite mug. He chose Anna's mug and got a shocking surprise.
Anna, who was in the bathroom, returned to the kitchen at full speed because she felt that Charles was already there. Charles' face was one of disappointment. She tried to explain, but he raised his hand with a gesture that she should not say anything. She took her favorite cup of coffee and went to the master bedroom.
Anna followed him in anguish, asking him to let her explain. Charles turned around and asked her how long she had been cheating on him, and why if he loved her so much she had to keep lying.
Anna, all nervous, told him about her family, about how she had been raised. She also told him that she was totally sorry for not telling him anything and for making fake scenes every morning.
He approached her and told her how bad he felt, how sad and disappointed he was. Suddenly, Charles felt a pang in his heart. As he put his hand to his chest, he asked how could she have kept something so important from him. What else could she have kept from him?
Charles fell to the ground and Anna leaned over to prevent him from hitting his head. It had been a dizzy spell from the upset, from the devastating news.
Anna told him that she loved him, that it was not her intention to deceive him, that she only wanted to please his tastes. That she had faked it for ten years out of love for him. That she had done it to share that moment with him. That she was sorry for having lied to him.
Charles did not know what to think. On the one hand, he was relieved that Anna had not been unfaithful to another man. On the other hand, he was disappointed that Anna did not share his passion for coffee. He thought that was something that brought them together, and it turned out to be a sham.
Charles sighed. Then he stood up, thought better of it, and smiled.
Charles told her that he also loved her more than anything in the world. He told her that he understood her reasons. But he also told her that there was a condition for them to stay together. Anna asked him what that condition was.
Charles asked her to take a sip of coffee to clear up any doubts about whether she liked it or not. Anna laughed and then hugged Charles.
Anna told him she was fine. That she would drink coffee with him.
Charles and Anna kissed. Then they sat on the couch with two cups and discovered that she was fascinated by coffee.
She shouted that she had lived an absence of the most wonderful thing in life after Charles, of course.
From that moment on, the most beautiful love story ever told was written, and thanks to coffee.
