Ndị Igbo made more than 40% of the people taken to Virginia during the time of Enslavement. They contributed hugely to the journey and development of Virginia and the United States of America at large. They were known for their hardwork, even though this did not favor them in that time as they became highly sort after for the hard works at the Plantations.
At the end of it all an igbo village was Created, this village was created to honor them...their contributions and resilience. This Village however is to show how they lived in their free communities back home.
There are other historic villages in the museum and Igbo Village is used to represent the West Africa Exhibit.
I am glad to be currently interning here and spending my time here for the next two months. To me, it is honoring that legacy too.
I am honor our Ancestors who hard to go through a lot that we might be today.
By the way, an Igbo man, Olauda Equiano was the first enslaved person to buy back his freedom with money in 1766.
