Science quote of the day:
"By far the greatest danger of Artificial Intelligence is that people conclude too early that they understand it." ~ Eliezer Yudkowsky

Ecology: Long Live the Mosquito: Cautioning Against Deliberate Extinctions

Original post by mountainwashere@mountainwashere

bitfairy recently wrote that was featured on steemSTEM Distilled advocating the extinction of mosquitoes. And, indeed, there are some good reasons to take the idea seriously. Malaria is the most notable reason- this mosquito-carried disease kills nearly half a million people every year. Other diseases carried by mosquitoes, including West Nile, Yellow Fever, Zika, tularemia, and more, infect nearly 700 million people a year, killing over a million of them total. It's all nasty stuff. Thanks to it, mosquitoes kill more humans than any other animal by a long shot. And yet I'm still somewhat opposed to wiping out mosquitoes. A female Culiseta longiareolata mosquito. Female mosquitoes a...

Anthropology: The Caddo Nation Thrives

Original post by janton@janton

Howdy folks and kua'at from the Great Plains of North Texas. "kua'at" in the Caddo language means "greetings." I have been talking about the history and survival of the Caddo Nation and I wanted to finish the series today with just a little more information. The two main items which the Caddo were known for were the pottery and bows which were widely sought after among tribes all over the U.S. The pottery is being crafted again by two Caddo artists and the bows have continued to be made from the Bois De Arc wood just like they have been for a thousand years. Below is a Bois De Arc tree, we have them on our property but I didn't know them as their proper name. We always knew the...

Original post by laylahsophia@laylahsophia

My dear readers, today I wanna re-start my blogging activities here on steemit after a quite long period of absence for which I truly apologize. But now I am back with a fresh subject that might be as fascinating to you as it is to me: Science in Ancient Egypt. You will be probably surprised of what I summarize under "science", but after reading maybe you agree with me - innovation and technology is something that is accompanying us since millennia and it won't stop in future. ;) In this article I wanna cover two areas of science that played an important role in Ancient Egypt: Astronomy and time-keeping In this article I wanna cover two areas of science that played an imp...
