Welcome to the 59th Daily Field Note! Here you find the top post of the day, one covering each scientific field that is included by Geopolis. Since these authors put a lot of effort in writing a good post they surely deserve the extra exposure.

Science quote of the day:

Geography: Nigeria: Ethnic Diversity
Nigerians are made up of over 250 ethnic groups. The peoples of all these ethnic groups and a few foreigners make up the people in the country, as counted by the Nigeria population commission. We can divide the indigenous groups into three: the northern, the middle belt and the southern groups. Among the northern groups are the Hausa, the Fulani and the Kanuri. They are predominantly Muslims with little groups of Christian communities, speak the Hausa language , live on open grassland and are traditionally livestock rearers, farmers and traders.
Geology: Earthquakes -- Strongest Quakes Possible -- Could One Break Earth? -- Moon Quakes -- P-Waves and S-Waves
Original post by @physics.benjamin
The article will focus of EARTHQUAKES, they can be devastating forces of nature. Throughout history earthquakes have wreaked havoc, the ancients used to think it was the wrath of the gods. Now with modern day science we know exactly what they are, how they occur, the strength can be measured, but they can never be predicted preciously, and can occur at any moment.
Ecology: Creative Destruction
The forest fills with underbrush, dead-
Wood tangling even shrew legs, tiny bones
The evidence, if you could see them. Red,
Burned in the sun, the grass dries on the stones.A gale whips up the grass and dust, a cloud
Emerges, lightning strikes, the flames leap out,
The heat and flames create a dance -- they're proud
Of what they're doing, live without a doubt....
Archeology: How did the inhabitants of Pompeii die? - How it happened according to the latest scientific research
The explosion of the eruption caused a deadly cloud of stones, ashes and vapors that rose to a height of 32 kilometers, throwing molten rocks and powdered pumice, a ratio of 1.5 million tons per second. It is estimated that Vesuvius released hundreds of times the thermal energy released by the bombing of Hiroshima. The city of Pompeii was devastated by pyroclastic rivers and it is estimated that at least 16,000 citizens perished.
