Welcome to the 46th Daily Field Note! Here you find the top post of the day, one covering each scientific field that is included by Geopolis. Since these authors put a lot of effort in writing a good post they surely deserve the extra exposure.

Geopolis is a project to promote and connect authors who write in the fields of global sciences. Upvotes are currently worth more than $1,50 so don't hesitate to get involved or become a member for higher rewards! You can read more about the project and how to join here:

Geology: The Great Alaskan Earthquake of 1964: Groundbreaking Geological Discovery of the 20th Century

Original post by @keephy

This map displays the areas significantly affected the Great Alaskan Earthquake of 1964. ] It was roughly 60 years ago when the theory of plate tectonics was validated by the geoscientific community. When you consider how short of period that truly is, versus how far the science of geology has come, it's truly astonishing. Naturally and unfortunately, the knowledge we've acquired regarding the geological processes occurring below us, largely derived from the geological events-earthquakes, tsunami, landslides, volcanoes, etc. that occurred around us throughout history. Around the same time plate tectonics was accepted as common knowledge (late 1950's early 1960's), a geological event wou...

Octopi swim headfirst, with their tentacles trailing behind them. ] The cephalopods are without question the crowning achievement of molluscan complexity. They're the most intelligent class of invertebrate animals by far, especially octopi, many of which are improvisational tool users. They're also as distant of relatives as ...
