@mattlovell and me on a scenic drive through Red Rock Canyon State Park. We left Jawbone Canyon Station, and escaped outside the atmosphere past Ricardo Campground area. The park is huge: 27,000 acres of fascinating geology. Rather than pass through the visitor kiosk, we veered north on 4wd tracks towards Dove Springs. Red Rocks give way to white sediment, the fossil of a primordial sea. We cut right on SC 103 and cross Hwy 14. Now we are in opal country We rattle and crawl like a moon rover over chalk-white crags. Little trails lead off to long-abandoned mines.

In the mid 1600s, the prominent English doctor Thomas Sydenham claimed that foul vapours rose from the Earth's rotting center and infected cities, which led to epidemics. Another Englishman, Edwin Chadwick, put it even more bluntly when he said that "All smell is disease."
From ancient times until the 1880s, the miasma theory of disease was the dominant theory of disease in both Europe and East Asia. Put simply, it claimed that bad odors and foul vapors caused disease. Miasma comes from ancient Greek and translates to "pollution". It was an incredibly dominant theory for that entire period. Though we now know that this is a misconception, and that disease in fact comes from microscopic invasive organisms, for most of history there were actually quite convincing reasons to believe in the miasma theory of disease.
History: The 1700 "Cascadia" Juan de Fuca Earthquake.
@gabemanThe 1700 Cascadia earthquake took place along the Cascadia subduction zone on the 26th of January, 1700AD with an estimated moment magnitude of 8.7-9.2. The megathrust earthquake involved the Juan de Fuca Plate from mid-Vancouver Island, south along the Pacific Northwest coast as far as northern California. The length of the fault rupture was about 1,000 kilometers , with an average slip of 20 meters . This earthquake also caused a tsunami which affected badly the coast of Japan and it is also linked to the Bonneville Slide eruption in the British Columbia.
