In today's stage of my tour along the Swabian Jura, I invite you on a little excursion to a natural spectacle that has fascinated since it was discovered. Welcome to the Blautopf.

The Blautopf (german for blue pot) is located at the outskirt of the city of Blaubeuren and forms the exit of the largest cave system in germany's federal state Baden-Württemberg. An underground network more than 12 km long with countless branches, cavities, large halls and narrow channels, below and above the water line. The rainfall of the region trickles into this cave system and exits at the Blautopf with an average outflow of 2'000 liter per second. After prolonged rain the outflow can increase up to 32'000 liter per second, a volume equalling the filling of a standard road tanker! I once had the chance to witness such a peak outflow and I can tell you that the entire Blautopf appeared as if it was boiling. Unfortunately, I had no camera with me back then.

Let's talk about corals.

I find that corals are one of the most ecologically important organisms that do not get talked about a lot. Let me ask you something: do you think corals are animals, plants, or just plain lifeless substrates, like a rock?
Coral reefs are the underwater ecosystems built by tiny organisms that produce their own calcium carbonate structures. Basically, the organisms build their own "rock" so that the system becomes sturdy and stable for other organisms to live in. Corals are the tiny colonial polyps that live in between the slots or cups in those calcium carbonate structures and they exist only when a certain set of conditions have been met.

Malaria's history on earth is likely older than human history. While it is believed that the first hominids walked the planet about 6 million years ago, fossil evidence of the mosquito vector for the disease is 30 million years old. The disease has infected both human and nonhuman species. Bats may have been the first mammalian hosts. As is true with several other diseases that plague humans, bats seem to be a reservoir for malaria.

Malaria is a killer. When it doesn't kill, it can rob people of productive lives. The disease targets the vulnerable especially--children chief among these. While malaria deaths were declining for a few years...
