Soon the result of the common entrance examinations came out and Obioha had one of the best results, but he was not consoled. Even when he heard that he had been admitted into the prestigious government secondary school at the state capital, it still did not cheer him up. Fr. Richard was always there trying to make him accept what he could not change. He was helpful in any way he could but Obioha became bitter and full of rage. He developed a temper that could be easily touched.
At the government secondary school, he excelled academically but was always in one form of trouble or the other. Wherever there was a fight, a brawl quarrel, he was wont to be in the midst of it all. On several occasions, he would have been expelled if not for the timely intervention of Fr. Richard. He usually calmed the principal down and at times had to take Obioha with him back to the parish for quite some time. He counselled him and he promised to turn a new leaf. Though he tried to change, yet there were several occasions when he had to go on suspension for one form of trouble or the other.
All these brought him into bad light. Oyibo became reluctant to let him spend his holidays with her as before. Nwamaka on her part was always on edge whenever he visited. Euna became apprehensive about him because he was always the cause of one trouble or the other whenever he was around.
Whenever he was at home, Euna was always scared. This was because he was particularly annoyed with Euna for letting him grow up; believing himself to be what he was not. He made life miserable for her by going contrary to anything Euna counselled. He rebelled at her every instruction and kept her constantly ill at ease.
The only person who loved him and tolerated his faults was Fr. Richard. He excused his faults and tried as much as he could for him. Many a time Obioha would spend his holiday with him. Even after he left Nneri for other parishes, Obioha usually visited him wherever he was. Fr. Richard was the only person who could talk sense into him whenever he was in one of his moods.
This traumatic experience continued till the end of his secondary school days. Then suddenly, Fr. Richard was quickly flown out of the country on medical grounds. Obioha did not even have the opportunity of bidding him farewell. He came on a visit and was told that Fr. Richard had been flown out for medical treatment. This was a big blow to Obioha. He felt lost and was left without any other support. They lost contact with each other for several years.
