An in-depth discussion on What is prayer? and What good is it?
While it is true man may not always know what to pray for, if we ask the Holy Ghost to aid us to move us to Holy desires to seek the things we need.
Therefore when we see the things we need, then we'll end up praying more to ask for those things.
One of the things God likes to do to is he'll oblige people very quickly if they want to know what their sins are, he's very quick to let you know what they are... and at times can be brutal.
This is a necessary thing because people are often so blind to there own sin they don’t even know what to pray for.
And so we can ask God to give us the grace to see what our sins are so that we can help to overcome them.
This is one of the principal things that prayer needs to do is ask Gods aid in helping us to come knowledge of what our defects and short comings are;
Grace has actual Two principles effects:
That is the will is strengthened its resolve to do what is right and so God inclines us to do the right thing through grace but also it enlightens the mind.
Now if you see someone close to you or somebody who maybe clueless or whatever the case maybe or you yourself think you're clueless... this pertains to all of us labouring under original sin then if you pray to God he will enlighten your mind so you can see what your defect is or your spouse can see the defect they have
And also sometimes people see the defect they have; so one of the reasons you pray for other people is so that they can get the grace , so that they can make the choice of will to do the right thing even if they know it.
God desires that we ask for specific things and people will find it more efficacious.
For example if we ask for a specific virtue which we know we lack, it is more efficacious that is its God will help us more than if we just ask for things in general. That’s not saying that asking things in general isn’t good, I mean sometimes you know just have to say well “help my son” or whatever the case may be. It is better for us to know the specific thing, God wants us to be specific you know :
“God give me the virtue of humility and meekness so that I may no longer suffer from anger”
In other words that’s a much more efficacious prayer for two reasons:
Should we pray for temporal goods? Temporal goods should not be sough for there own sake but insofar they lead us into beatitude, that is insofar they lead us into heaven.
For instance the reason a husband or wife prays for a good job to make money or things like that they need is to fulfil the moral obligations in the family which will help them to lead a better life of virtue.
