All the dialogs in the movie was Yukatek Mayan which is spoken by a small community in Yukatan Land. Gibson made the movie in Mexican forrests. The oracle girl in the movie had never been to a movie before.
Mel Gibson and his history advisor for the movie Richard Hansen assumed that the movie could enlight the Mayan history. They mentioned that Mayans were wilder than in the movie. Historians critisized tthe movie that it was not realistic and most of the traditions shown were Gibson's creativity and alegory.
