Hello, everyone! It’s truly a pleasure for me to be here for another week, sharing our experiences, reflections, and the everyday moments that bring us together each week in this wonderful community. This week’s questions were written by our friend ifarmgirl@ifarmgirl; they’re great and, at the same time, a direct reflection of our inner world. Today we’re going to talk about that invisible inhabitant we all carry inside: our inner critic. I think most of us have one, even though we usually try to ignore it. In my case, it’s not exactly an enemy, but it’s certainly a pretty loud and demanding roommate who’s been with me for as long as I can remember.

“What’s her favorite line?” It’s undoubtedly: “Do you really think you’re ready for this?” It’s a short line, but it carries enormous weight—she doesn’t insult me directly, but she sows doubt. It strikes right at my confidence the very moment I decide to step outside my comfort zone; she knows me very well, and she knows it will make me doubt my abilities. When does she speak the loudest? Her voice becomes deafening in two very specific situations. The first is when I’m facing the uncertainty of a new project—whether it’s work-related, creative, or personal—that’s when she starts whispering to me that failure is guaranteed. The second scenario is during sleepless nights. When the world falls silent, my inner critic takes advantage of the quiet to take a detailed inventory of all the mistakes I made that day, emphasizing the small slip-ups until they seem like catastrophes.

How do I picture her? If she were a person and walked through my front door, she’d be an impeccably dressed woman. I imagine a stern-looking figure, dressed in black, with a notebook where she jots down absolutely everything—something like Nanny McPhee, you know, from the movie about the nanny with magical powers. She’s not a monster or someone who yells; her power lies in her cold, disapproving gaze and her rigid body language, which conveys that nothing I do will ever be perfect enough. Her personality is that of an obsessive, controlling perfectionist. She’s extremely analytical, distrustful, calculating, and completely lacking in spontaneity. Her greatest fear is failing and feeling vulnerable. Although I know that deep down her twisted intention is to “protect me” from ridicule or failure, her method is paralyzing. Over the years, I’ve learned to listen to her without letting her take the wheel of my life. Now, when she asks me if I’m ready, I simply smile at her, take a deep breath, and show her that I can move forward even with my imperfections in tow.
