Society loves to paint a picture that does not correctly correspond with the reality of things as they are.

Yeah...I sometimes wonder why media loves to push the whole happy family despite arguments narrative. Oh yeah, your grandma might be a racist horrible person...but we all still love her, despite her kicking us whenever our parents turn their backs.

In real life, sometimes family is the one that we turn to...but not all family. It's usually one or two specific members, who have decided to be there for us when we need a ride or a shoulder to cry on. Other members may only help very reluctantly, often only after other members push them to do so. And often family is also the source of abuse and pain for many people. I can't imagine how horrible it is for the worst abuse victims to suffer through the happy family puke fests that are corporate Hollywood feel good propaganda.

We may have a few realistic movies, that are likewise very horrible to watch for some people, but they are the exception. There are more movies that are intentionally focused on abuse, rather than just showing reality.

The reality is that many people have often undergone at least some minor forms of abuse that they can't even likely even admit to themselves, let alone others. And if they even mention it to the person, they will likely gaslight them, telling them they are delusional.

But movies often don't even show real arguments. This is almost like a form of gas lighting in itself, because people may come to think that their reality is abnormal, and they're crazy, because they do sometimes explode, and may have mood swings, or other things.

you should never feel forced to maintain ties with someone that brings toxicity into your life and that sucks life out of you.

No, you shouldn't. Of course, some families disown family members due to such stupid things, like who they're attracted to, or any number of stupid reasons.

It’s not like they push on us the importance of being in touch with our emotional world or of healing our heart.

No, in fact they make fun of candidates for using language talking about love and such.

Sadly, it isn’t a given that a parent will love their children unconditionally. I’d almost be tempted to say that it’s an ideal.

Of course it is. Even if they do love you...everything suggests that it's not unconditional, or even if it is, it doesn't mean they won't treat you like garbage. People that cheat on their spouses don't do so because they don't love them. Love has nothing to do with whether or not you will hurt someone.
