During the eclipse, the Moon is in the constellation Cancer. The eclipse is preceded two weeks earlier by a partial solar eclipse on. A total lunar eclipse will appear overnight from Sunday (Jan. 20) to Monday (Jan. 21), and the potentially copper-colored moon — dubbed a "blood moon".
For observers in the Americas, the eclipse will take place between the evening of Sunday, January 20 and the early morning hours of Monday, January 21. The eclipse will occur during a supermoon. It will also be the last total lunar eclipse until May 2021. This year we will be blessed with three solars and two lunar eclipses.
A lunar eclipse can occur only during a full moon phase. That’s because it’s the only time that the moon can be directly opposite the sun in Earth’s sky and swing through the Earth’s shadow. This full moon will appear to be one of the largest of 2019. Sunlight scatters to produce the red colors of sunset and sunrise when it enters Earth's atmosphere at a particular angle. A blood moon is one of the few opportunities we have to see both the moon and the stars in the sky at the same time since the moon is usually too bright!
To a certain extent, lunar eclipses reveal something about Earth, too. "Lunar eclipses ... reflect our world," astronomer Pamela Gay: "A blood-colored moon is created [by] ash from fires and volcanoes, ... dust storms and pollution all filtering sunlight as it scatters around our world. A grey eclipse is clear skies.
An Eclipse Never Comes Alone!
A solar eclipse always occurs about two weeks before or after a lunar eclipse.
Usually, there are two eclipses in a row, but other times, there are three during the same eclipse season.
