The Convolvulus Hawk-Moth 🦋 / Метелик-шпигун з сімейства бражників (EN -UA)

Hello everyone!
Today I want to tell you a story about a fantastic butterfly. It watched me while I was working in the garden two days ago. Its Latin name is Agrius convolvuli. It is also called the convolvulus hawk-moth (Sphingidae).

Before sunset, I cut the faded flowers in the flowerbed and, glancing at the garden gate, suddenly noticed that someone was watching me. From a distance, it seemed to me that it was a bat! I looked closer and saw that it was a butterfly. The hawk-moth sat on the wooden garden gate and looked at me. It was fun and a little scary at the same time. I have never seen such a large butterfly with such big eyes. 👀

Maybe this butterfly is some kind of spy agent? Look how it watches my house. 😆

Later, I read that this hawk-moth is among the largest-sized moths, with a wingspan sometimes exceeding 120–160 mm. Unfortunately, I was not lucky enough to see its wingspan, but I trust the scientists. So I did not bother the butterfly, and after taking these photos, I continued to work in my garden.

By the way, in my garden, I have often seen the butterfly, which looks like that small hummingbird, coming to taste the nectar of the fragrant phlox. However, this "giant" visited me for the first time. The convolvulus hawk-moth looks like an alien. 👽 What do you think of this one? 🙂

Ось такий метелик-шпигун завітав нещодавно до мене в гості, аби перевірити, як я працюю в садку, зрізаючи зів'ялі квіти. Хоча, можливо, у нього була інша місія? 🤔 Я побачила його здалеку на садовій хвіртці, і мені здалося спочатку, що це кажан. Але коли я придивилася зблизька, то виявилося, що це метелик з сімейства бражників, який по-науковому називається Agrius convolvuli. Раніше ніколи не бачила метелика з такими очиськами.

Мені від схожий на якогось прибульця. А вам? Виявляється, що це один із найбільших метеликів з сімейства бражників, який має розмах крил 120-160 мм. Мені, не жаль, не вдалося в цьому пересвідчитися, бо цей "гігант" весь час сидів нерухомо. То ж я не стала його турбувати, і зробивши ці фото, продовжила працювати в садку.
