Spider-Man PS4 sports an open-world. Although that term implies some sort of near endless amount of gameplay, it also suggests an overwhelming dread that makes playing them a lot more troublesome than they should be.
This is largely due to open-world games being loaded with side objectives and content that are not vital to the main storyline. Game devs try to play this up in an attempt to show that there's a lot to do and tap into our inner completionist. The result is a game in which the main story is overshadowed by side-quests and lore explorations, and an interface that is full of map markers and icons. It's evident in Bethesda's Fallout franchise and Skyrim, as well as Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed franchise.
Spider-Man PS4 avoids going down the same road with a map while loaded with missions, side-quests, challenges, and the like, never feels overwhelming. This is partly thanks to its map size, the map of New York City in Spider-Man isn't that big or crammed with objectives. It allows the player some space to breathe and take in the sights and sounds in the game. In addition, side contents are strategically drip fed over the duration of the game.
You won't be taught about the various tokens(Challenge tokens, Research tokens, Landmark tokens, Base tokens, and Crime tokens ) in one go, instead they're doled out as you progress through the story. Challenge tokens are obtained by defusing bombs, drones, and taking out mercenaries. Do these across the city and everyone's favourite Spider-Man critic J Jonah Jameson will sound off about Spider-Man's "exploits" on the radio. Everything you do will affect the overall state of the game, and it keeps you wondering what will happen next.
Spider-Man PS4 doesn't force you to toil through soul crushing side quests to achieve 100% completion in order to get a "true" ending, it respects your time by hiding none of its crucial content behind such events. All of this makes Spider-Man PS4 a part of the rare current generation games where getting its platinum trophy a reachable task. You never feel overwhelmed a seemingly unsurmountable number of goals or tasks. Clever design makes this game a single-player title that you want to keep coming back to.
