Yes it is very involved, especially when one is looking for precision loads. I don't tend to worry too much with the handgun ammunition though as I'm looking for volume. Still, I have a minimum standard and stick to it. I'm a fairly fastidious dude so all of my ammo meets a minimum high standard. :)
