It suits the political agenda of some groups to make examples of this sort of thing to further their own needs or support their case. I don't want to go into it here of course. I'll just support my mate and make sure he's ok. He has done no wrong in this case and despite the outcome he'll still be more important to me than an alleged criminal, no matter that alleged criminals colour.
