I've got two convicts in my past family history. Both did 20 years at Port Arthur, Tasmania (The penal colony). I've written about them here. One male, one female...Death sentences for theft and larceny respectively, then commuted to transportation. Difficult to imagine really. They did well to survive. (This was back in the mid 1800's of course)
