I have the same molar missing! Funny huh? And for pretty much the same reason. I didn't want the crown and so she removed it (the one that had shattered due to the original amalgam filling). I was in the chair for an hour before she gave up...Called the dental surgeon over the road and sent me there with a wad of gauze jammed in there...I walked over and 20 minutes later no tooth. The guy was brutal. It was not pleasant at all. I still give my dentist shit for that! Lol.

My face didn't go all elephant-man on me but it took a few weeks go back to normal, the tooth and gum.
