We're creatures of habit; We tend to drink the same beverages, eat the same sort of foods, wear the same type of clothing, frequent the same places...We like our comfort-zones and tend to repeat the same routines over and over because they feel comfortable. There's nothing wrong with it I guess and some hold to it stringently and others not so. Faith and I tend to find a nice balance as we aren't set in our ways and are open to new tings, people and places. But we have habits too.

Yesterday was the 27th anniversary of our wedding day; This morning, however, we woke up like we do on any given Sunday and simply went on with our lives.

There was no trumpet fanfare, champagne didn't fall from the sky and no choir of angels were singing...Just a normal Sunday. Although... Today is one day a year that is somewhat different to every other day...It's day of the dress; This special day is the one on which Faith unpacks her wedding dress and tries it on and she has done it every single year since 1993 when she put it on to marry me.

Day of the dress

When day of the dress begins I often make myself scarce; I head out into my workshop and tinker about for a while with the intention being that I'm not around if the dress doesn't actually fit. It hasn't happened yet so I'm not sure what may occur if that was to be the case, but discretion is the better part of valour they say, and so I disappear.

You see, for every one of the twenty seven years since our marriage Faith has unpacked her dress and put it on. We don't go out or anything, that'd be kind of stupid, but she wears it around for ten minutes, I take a photo, and then she packs it away again. Every year it has still fitted her like the day we were married...

So, this morning, like always, I headed out into my workshop and waited, pretending to do something and listening out for potential screams.

I didn't hear any screaming or yelling for a few minutes so I was optimistic and then...The door of my workshop slid back and there stood Faith wearing her wedding dress, hands on hips, grin on face.

"It still fits," she said with glee; The typical comment she makes each year.

I looked her up and down with an appreciating eye and she gathered the train up in one arm, did a little twirl, and then stopped to meet my gaze once more. Yes, fit it certainly did. I smiled and we had a kiss and hug. She was happy and I avoided any day of the dress disasters.

A lot has happened in our lives over the thirty three years we have been together and in the twenty seven of those years we've been married we've experienced great highs and lows and everything in between of course.

People change in that time too...My wife was twenty two on our wedding day, it was her birthday in fact, and she's changed physically and emotionally in that time, as I have too.

But some things stay the same; Our passion, respect and love we have for each other and the way we re-invent ourselves, and relationship, as we get older and time passes. I think that's important. Although one thing that hasn't changed is her dress size which she proves each year on our anniversary with her day of the dress habit.

This is a little habit Faith has each year and we have others of course, but now it's your turn...What habit do you have? Tell me about it below; You don't have to get too personal, just keep it light-hearted and don't go into too much detail if you don't want to, just share something that you do habitually.
