Subservient, docile and easily manipulated not to dream of anything other than being “normal”?

I hate it when people use the word "normal" to describe themselves or others. So, the others which are not normal are what, abnormal? That implies that anyone not following the "norm" is out of line and should be silenced. Why not ordinary and extraordinary? Or regular person/people? I guess the questions are rhetorical.
