Greetings to all members of the community, how are you? Every day that passes I observe in the news with concern that people in this country where I live are committing atrocious acts against defenseless animals that in most cases are living on the streets. It is understandable that not everyone is in a privileged situation to help these beings deserving of love and company, it is an undeniable reality that having a pet involves incurring expenses that not many have the possibility to afford, but from there to actively do evil to them, there is an abysmal distance, not even when an animal has hurt me has it crossed my mind to take advantage of my superiority to get even, because despite any bad reaction they may have at a moment, they are still living beings and deserve respect, they need to be understood as they are without expecting them to reason in the same way a human being would.

Un gato me arañó después de acariciarlo – A cat scratched me after I petted it

I am currently in Margarita Island. On the streets of my urbanization there are a great number of animals that survive thanks to those charitable souls of the community who are always willing to feed them, give them water, and take care of them when they are sick. You could say that these are something like community pets, that is, pets that are cared for by everyone in the community, because every day I observe different neighbors feeding these animals, who also walk around their homes as if they were part of the family because that is how they are being treated. I engaged in conversation with one of them who outside his house had at least five cats waiting for him, he told me that they were always there because every day he gives them something to eat, however, what surprised me the most was that he admitted that he is not a fan of cats because he thinks they transmit many diseases such as mononucleosis, but he would not leave them to their fate if he could help them.

This is the attitude we should have! I don't understand how there are people who want to harm street animals, honestly I am one of those people who get attached to them quickly, I can't help but be fond of them when I meet one. There are two dogs in particular, a female and a male, who stole my heart, as both are the most tender animals you can find with you, those that when they see you start wagging their tails, following you everywhere. Brando is the one who has become more attached because at my aunt's house they always feed him, leave him water, allow him to rest, remove ticks and even when in a street fight he hurt one of his paws they decided to help him to get better until he walked again without problems. This could be his only fault, he is very feisty, he likes to fight with any dog that crosses his path with a lot of aggressiveness, so much that it is impossible to get involved because you can get seriously hurt.

A couple of days ago, he even accompanied us to the dance practice my cousin was supposed to do for the Christmas holidays at her school and even stayed to watch, as if he were a watchdog. The funny thing is that people around us wondered whose dog it was out of curiosity, many would believe it was ours because it came with us and left with us faithfully, at least getting some sort of payment for its company in the form of food. As we are in the rainy season, he appeared one day at the entrance of the house crying because he was getting wet, so desperate he got that he did not give me time to look for the keys to open the door when he was already inside, surprisingly managing to get through the bars to wait for the rain to pass in a dry and safe place, shuddering with thunder because like my dog, Toby, he is afraid of those rumbles... the same happens to him with fireworks and sudden explosions.

We are also visited by a dog that I don't know if she has a name, I have asked several neighbors and they can't tell me one, so I will call her Dulce, at the risk of exploding out of creativity, since she is a complete sweetheart. I have noticed that she is a bit thin and the fact that his ribs are so noticeable, so in an attempt to help her gain some weight I am insisting to my family to put food aside so she can eat more, because of the state her teats are in, I assume she had pups, maybe that is why she is in that state, but I have not been able to see if those hypothetical pups are in the area as I have not seen them anywhere, nor that the dog is going to meet them somewhere. Sometimes, when you try to help street animals you have this feeling that no help is enough, that they need more, and yes, maybe so, these angels have so many deficiencies that anything seems too little, but you have to concentrate on what you are doing to not give up.

I wish I could have them both, but I already have pets that need me and I am missing them madly while I am far away, for reasons of impossibility in the transfer we were forced to leave them at home and they are being cared for by some neighbors who decided to stay there frequently in our absence. Anyway, we are organizing to deworm them since apparently they are not and it is one of the first things that should be done for their health, meanwhile we will continue giving them food, water and love, because they deserve it as much as any pet at home, they are not worth less and they are not disposable for not having a home. I hope they get a permanent one, although it is difficult since there are too many animals on the street and the economic situation of the country is hard, however, hope is the last thing to lose.
