Africa can be depressing. A mere drift of thought into our current status as a continent and I find myself in a spinning vortex of misery. I shudder thinking how we got here, and how things became so bad. We were once hailed as the last frontier, the last continent where true wealth and abundance can be created.
Endowed with natural resources and a blooming, youthful population, it’s no surprise our parents were livid with expectations of a brighter future for us. The story is much different now, the goal of many African youths these days is to leave Africa. There’s a general sense of hopelessness in the air. Even those entrusted with the responsibilities of elevating optimism cautiously plan their exit strategies, as most children of the political class possess dual citizenship in the western World.
Envisioning a prosperous future would have proved futile, but for the relentless pursuits in perpetual optimism of some amazing individuals. They are a growing, thirsty breed of mostly young entrepreneurs making giant strides on the continent. With every victory, they win new converts and make us believers in the true paradigm to finally unlocking Africa’s potential.
Recognizing our location as one brimming with challenges, these bold ones take it upon themselves to solve them. It is no surprise that this revolution is being spearheaded by young people, and rightly so if we’re to finally get it right.
