The 80's were one of the most relevant in the history of video games, because many companies were motivated to enter this innovative market, as well as events that defined the future for many developers. This time we will see a console unknown to many, because at the time it went unnoticed in many parts of the world and more at that time that the market was oversaturated, this is the Voltmace Database Games Computer.
Voltmace before entering independently in the world of video games was a company recognized in those years for specializing in board games, including the famous Monopoly, however, were responsible for distributing at some point consoles Teleng brand in the UK, these were quite striking for its time.
But Teleng decided to retire from the video game industry due to low sales, and Voltmace saw an opportunity to make their own system with a Signetics 2650 CPU, resulting in a console with a strange name, Database Games Computer, which was officially launched in 1980.
The design of this console was very simple (like many of that time), with two controllers which had 14 buttons, which had different functions depending on the video game, also in the upper part had 1 joystick that allowed us to move in the games. On the right side of the console there were 4 buttons, one was used to reset, another one to select the game, the third one to start playing and the last one was an on-off switch.
For the Database Games Computer a total of 29 games were released, something that really surprises, since most of these consoles did not have much support in terms of game programming, but in this case had a curious catalog, which worked through interchangeable cartridges, these were inserted into a slot in the upper right.
Despite being a good video game console for its time, it did not have the success that its developer company expected during its lifetime, selling only 55,000 units, this was because at that time the market was oversaturated with many game consoles, on the other hand, Atari had dominated the market with its Atari 2600, causing many companies to be completely removed from the radar of gamers.
As a curious fact, there were several rumors about this console, one of them was that its transformer became alarmingly hot, a rumor that nowadays is a little complicated to verify, since most of those power transformers have already passed to a better life.
Getting this console today is a very complicated task, thanks to the few units that were sold in those years, if someone decides to sell it on any internet portal of sales and auctions, I doubt it will be at an affordable price, it is an item with many years of antiquity and if it is functional it raises its value radically.
