One of the complications of running applications on new platforms is that they probably do not run correctly or are simply not compatible, this is due to different factors, but the most common is that the new system is not compatible with the old architecture, this inconvenience can be seen with games designed for the DOS system by wanting to run them on today's operating systems, however we can solve this problem with an excellent emulator called DOSBox.

DOSBox allows to execute those video games based on MS DOS, FreeDOS or DrDOS systems, running them in a correct way. The reason that these games do not work in the new platforms is because they were designed for 16 bits systems, for that reason when placing them in 32 or 64 bits systems they usually give several errors depending on the way we execute them.

One of the interesting things about DOSBox is that it is not only limited to video games, we can also run any application based on these old systems, if you want to experiment with programs that came out between the 80's and 90's this emulator will help you without any inconvenience.

In spite of how attractive this emulator sounds, for many DOS novices it may seem a bit complicated, since it doesn't run in the same way as other emulators, that's why many people look for a small tutorial to run games in DOSBox. First of all, we must go to the official page and download the emulator corresponding to our operating system, you can do it by clicking here.

Once installed we run it and we will get a screen very similar to what was previously known as the DOS operating system. This emulator has something in common with the systems of long ago and it is that it shares all the commands that were used to be able to open folders or to execute applications, it is for this reason that the current gamers are confused, but in this publication I will give you the basic concepts.

First of all, you have to take into account that DOSBox works through virtual drives, that is to say, they do not really exist in your hard disk, this is done with the purpose of avoiding possible damages in the system by some malicious application, if something goes wrong we close the emulator window and we open it again.

The first thing you must do is to mount the virtual drive, for this you must use a structure where we indicate the command + virtual drive letter + pc folder address. Let's suppose that in your computer you have a folder called DOSGames in the hard disk C, where you have lodged all the subfolders with the games of long ago, in the DOSBox you would only have to execute the following command mount h: c:\DOSGames.

What we are doing is creating a virtual drive called "h" and we are establishing the content of that drive, which will be the entire DOSGames folder of our physical hard drive. With this we can already navigate with the DOSBox and run the games, but to accomplish this task we must learn certain basic commands.

dir: allows us to see the contents of the folder

cd + folder name: used to enter the folder

cd: leaving the folder

With these three commands it will be enough to explore inside the folders and check its content, I will use as example the video game Prince of Persia, in my case I created a folder in the c drive called DOSGames, I mounted the virtual drive in the DOSBox and now I can see the content of the folder using the dir command.

As you can see I have three folders, in this case I use the command "cd prince1" to be able to enter in that folder, once inside I apply the dir command to see the content of it and to be able to look for the name of the executable of the video game.

Normally we can find three types of executables which are identified by the type of file, the most common are the .EXE, but we can find .BAT or .COM, we just have to be aware of what type of file the executable is programmed with, in my case there is one with the name prince.exe, by writing the name and hitting ENTER the game opens. If you want to see it in full screen you just have to press ALT+ENTER in the keyboard.

As a curious data DOSBox allows us to mount virtual CDROM units through an ISO, CUE or BIN image that we have in the computer, to achieve this we will use a structure similar to the previous one, only that using the command imgmount, an example would be "Imgmount and Larry.iso -t iso" where the letter "e" is the virtual CDROM unit that we are creating and Larry.iso is the image that we have inside the computer.

In this way we can install games that require a CD drive. Here ends the basic tutorial of how to run DOS-based games in the DOSBox emulator, if you would like to know more interesting things about this emulator or you would like to complement this tutorial I invite you to leave your opinion in the comments section.
