The other day I had the opportunity to visit a fair where they had a lot of traditional crafts and other kinds of things made with exotic materials. After seeing these kinds of necklaces and other interesting things, I started thinking about how to make them and sat down to experiment in my little workshop.
I looked for one of those little black leather strands, some gold-plated costume jewelry wire and a small snail I brought back from my trip to the beach. I thought about making a necklace but I didn't know how to make the hole in the snail, so I took a hammer, a nail and plasticine.
El otro día tuve la oportunidad de visitar una feria donde tenían un montón de artesanía tradicional y otros tipos de cosas hechas con materiales exóticos. Después de ver este tipo de collares y cosas tan interesantes, me puse a pensar cómo se hacen y me senté a experimentar en mi pequeño taller.
Busqué un pequeño hilo de esos de cuero negro, un alambre dorado de bisutería y un pequeño caracol que traje de mi viaje a la playa. Pensé en hacer un collar pero no sabía cómo hacerle el agujero al caracol, así que tomé un martillo, un clavo y plastilina.
It was just a matter of hitting the nail hard, fast and accurate, and that's how I managed to make the hole in the snail.
Of course, I had to use a small blade to remove some small pieces that were left over and still falling out of the front.
Fue cuestión de simplemente darle un golpe fuerte, rápido y certero al clavo y así logré hacerle el agujero al caracol.
Por supuesto, tuve que usar una pequeña cuchilla para quitar algunos pequeños trozos que sobraban y aún se caían de la parte de adelante.
With the golden wire I would make all the hooks and supports of the necklace, so I started to bend it in the little hole I made in the snail, to make a sort of ring to hang it.
Con el alambre dorado haría todos los ganchitos y soportes del collar, así que comencé a doblarlo en el agujerito que hice en el caracol, para hacer una suerte de argolla para colgarlo.
I coiled the wire so that it would be strong enough to hang down and not be easy to untangle. I did all this with specific pliers for this type of work.
Enrollé el alambre de manera que quedara lo suficientemente resistente para que cuelgue y no sea fácil de desenredar. Todo esto lo hice con pinzas específicas para este tipo de trabajos.
As I told you, I used one of those cords that are used to make these necklaces, although when I felt its texture and flexibility, it seemed more like plastic, not leather.
Maybe it was a semi leather, I don't know, but they sold it to me as leather. Below you can see what it looks like:
Como les dije, usé un cordoncito de estos que se usan para hacer estos collares, aunque al sentir su textura y su flexibilidad, más bien parecía de plástico, no cuero.
Quizás era un semi cuero, no lo sé, pero me lo vendieron como cuero. A continuación pueden ver cómo se ve:
Well, as I told you, I used the same wire to make the hook and eye that will hold the necklace. First I wrapped the wire around one end of the cord, or bent it at the end and closed the bend with more wire around it, as in the photo on the right.
Bien, como les dije, usé el mismo alambre para hacer el gancho y argolla que va a sostener el collar. Primero enrollé el alambre en un extremo del cordón, o doblé en la punta y cerré el doblez con más alambre alrededor, ta como en la foto de la derecha.
The idea is to make one end, insert the leather cord into the snail ring and then close the other end of the cord.
This is how I did it, as you can see in the image below.
La idea es hacer un extremo, introducir el cordón de cuero en la argolla del caracol y luego cerrar el otro extremo del cordón.
Así lo hice, como ven en la imagen de abajo.
Then I placed a little hook, made with the same golden wire, to close the two ends of the necklace.
I should clarify that I made one of the ends of the necklace with a large opening, so that I could hook it with the hook I made at the other end, this way it is securely fastened.
I remind you that the idea is to make a necklace with things made by ourselves, that's why I made the hooks with wire and I didn't buy them already made.
Luego le coloqué un ganchito, hecho con el mismo alambre dorado, para cerrar los dos extremos del collar.
Debo aclarar que uno de los extremos del collar lo hice con una apertura grande, para que pudiera enganchar con el gancho que le hice al otro extremo, de esta manera queda bien sujeto.
Les recuerdo que la idea es armar un collar con cosas hechas por nosotros mismos, por eso hice los ganchos con alambre y no los compré ya hechos.
Finally, I wanted to give it a special touch using some paint, in this case gold paint. I diluted it with a little water and carpentry glue, because the idea was to give it a golden finish, but that it looked transparent.
Por útlimo, quise darle un toque especial usando un poco de pintura, en este caso pintura dorada. La diluí con un poco de agua y pegamento de carpintería, pues la idea era darle un acabado dorado, pero que se viera trasparente.
I only applied a single coat of paint and it was left with the same original lines of the snail, but in gold color.

Solo le apliqué una sola capa de pintura y quedó con las mismas líneas originales del caracol, pero de color dorado.
