The point of this style of germination is to get the seed to crack open and start ejecting its tap root. With this method, you'll know if your seed is healthy and popping before you put it in the soil.

The amount of tap root ejected is the determination in a judgement based way for the cultivator, meaning I could wait for it to open up more, and some growers like to wait a little longer, but for me I feel confident with the seed as soon as it is cracking open and do not like to wait long to put it in soil.

In the soil, this tap root will shoot down while pushing up the seed shell itself above the soil. Inside of that little shell will emerge the first photosynthesizing leaves with green. Sometimes the shell has to be plucked off because it gets stuck.
