Weapon tiers: 

• Gray - Common
• Green - Uncommon
• Blue - Rare
• Purple - Epic
• Orange - Legendary

As you can see in the case of an assault rifle the difference is considerable.

The difference in shotguns is negligible.

These are not all weapons in the game, but I chose only the most interesting ones.
