Earlier today, I noticed something in the garden that immediately caught my attention. A group of flowers looked like they were only a few hours away from fully blooming. Judging by how much the petals had already opened, I’m quite sure that by tomorrow they will look completely different.
Of course, my first reaction was to grab my camera and take as many photos as I could.
Flowers in full bloom are always beautiful, and they are probably the stage that most people enjoy photographing. However, I think there is something equally interesting about seeing them just before that happens. The petals are beginning to separate, while some parts of the flower are still hidden inside. It feels like catching a small moment of transition that will not last very long.
That is probably what makes scenes like this precious to me.
Tomorrow, I can always return and photograph the flowers after they bloom, but I can never recreate exactly what I saw today. Once this stage passes, it is gone. Photography gives me a way to preserve it before nature continues with its process.
I also like how these flowers look in black and white. Without the distraction of color, the shapes of the petals, the texture of the leaves, and the darker surroundings become more noticeable. It gives this quiet moment a little more drama.
Sometimes we appreciate the final result so much that we forget there is also beauty in the moments leading toward it.
I’m glad I didn’t waste this opportunity.
Have a good day ahead!
