The minimum wage was originated to put minorities out of work. Prior to the minimum wage African American unemployment was incredibly low. It was designed by racists to put minorities out of work and it still acts to do that today. Let's say you are an EMT or a teacher who earns $15 an hour now, let's say the minimum wage is half of that, that means you can afford a lifestyle that is twice as good as minimum wage, when the minimum goes up to $15 an hour now you have all the buying power of minimum wage!
That's like cutting their pay in half. Just what percent of people do you think earn the minimum wage? What percent of people do you believe are the mythical single mother who is on minimum wage?
Do you make minimum wage?
How would you like if the minimum wage was whatever you make now? What would that do to your buying power and the value of the dollar?
What about all the folks who are teenagers or elderly people who are just supplementing their income, do you want them to have no job at all? That's who gets screwed. And then they don't learn the skills and gain the experience working they need to get better jobs when they are older and have a family.
I was working for $10 an hour sometime and some lady came up to me to try to get me to sign a petition to raise the minimum wage to $10 an hour, I'll ask you what I asked her, "why would I want to be making minimum wage?"
