I don't know how it works out in America, but here if you fire a gun you are dead or worse - so it's not worth doing. You only need one gun and two bullets - one to shoot the enemy, and one to shoot yourself.

Bullion is the only thing with a decent chance of holding it's value that the gov can't steal if they don't know where it is. A horse and cart is better than nothing at all.
