In the last garden journal update I showed how my garden was turned into a wilderness during a three week holiday abroud. I really had to do some pruning which I did. And I also had to do some harvesting since a lot of the vegetables were ready to be consumed.
The giant zucchini I had posted last time was waiting in the refrigerator until some more zucchinis were ready to be picked. The cucumbers I picked last time were already consumed as a healthy snack.
Cucumbers
I picked a couple more cucumbers. I have three cucumber plants, but only one of them had full grown cucumbers on them. The other two plants do have small cucumbers, but I guess they aren't getting as much sun as the one with the large cucumbers. Since they cucumbers were grouped together they got a bit too heavy for the plant so I cut them off.
Zucchini's
The giant zucchini I picked last time ended up with another zucchini and some vegetables from the store in a nice vegetable soup. I did plant a couple of sweet pepper plants myself, but somehow they didn't form any fruits yet. I do see some flowers on all of them. Time will tell if we will get our own sweet peppers later this year.
String beans
I had planted a couple of string beans that had grown quite fast during my holiday. They even have grown past the guiding sticks I had placed around them. After doing some harvesting we've been able to have them for dinner a couple of times already. They taste really good!
I read somewhere that the more you pick, the more the plant keeps growing new beans. I hope that is true because the plants are almost empty now.
Tomatoes
The tomatoes are growing slowly but steady. They still are quite green, but they will eventually turn red. I read that I need to cut off the top so they can send all their energy to the tomatoes. So that is what I did...
Let's see if they will turn red soon.
Apples
After I came home from holiday I noticed that someone had been nibbling on one of the apples. As I suspect a bird had done this I placed a net over it to protect if against the birds.
There are still about 15 apples on the tree. Not bad for the first year I think. I do wonder if they all grow big enough. Some of them are cluttered together and are still really tiny. Where some other are growing quite big already.
They are stil a bit yellow/greenish, but I think they will turn more red later in the season. I though apples are harvested late September/October so they still have the time to ripen.
Gardening in fall
Summer is slowly coming to an end. I do hope we will have some nice and warm days, but I do have to make some plans for the fall.
Most of the plants will keep on giving vegetables. I read zucchini's will keep growing until october and the more string beans you pick, the bigger your harvest will be.
As I mentioned earlier I don't see any sweet peppers yet.
I read I need to add some more fertilizer again, so I will do that soon.
And I have about a square meter free to plant something for the fall. Yeah, I know; it's not much, but I just have a part of the garden for my vegetables.
I read that you can still plant chard or lettuce in august in the climate we have, so I will find some seeds of that.
Thanks for reading my blog and happy gardening!
