In any English dictionary, approximately 80% of the entries are mainly borrowed from Latin. More than 60% of all English words have Latin or Greek roots. About 10% of the English vocabulary has found its way directly into English without an intercessor, like French. The figure rises to more than 90% in the vocabulary of the science and technology.
The classical languages' direct influence, began with the renaissance and has continued ever since.
The origin of words in Greek have essentially entered English in one of the following three ways:
- Indirectly by way of Latin
- Borrowed directly from Greek writers
- Especially in the case of scientific terms, formed in modern times by combining Greek elements in new ways.
For some time the whole Latin dictionary became potentially English and many words were formulated on the basis of Latin standard.
