First we need to clarify the democracy word.

It is the power to the people.
So the direct consequence of this definition is : all so called democracy are not.
They are representative democracy. Witch is a subtle oxymoron.
Because the power is to make the law, and in most country the everyday man never vote for a law, he vote for representatives.
The only right you have is to sometime choose the people who will have the power. (or more accurately choose the front-men of the true, behind the scene, power)

Second we need to think on the viability requirements for democracy

Each of the individuals in the democratic system :

• must have access to knowledge and, information (so total free speech)
• must have time to study all aspects of a topic. (the mainstream though and the fringe one)
• must accept the democratic idea and be free to leave whenever they want.

This being said not hard to conclude a fully democratic system isn't in action in so called Democracy and should not become because it is unsustainable.

Third could use democracy in some aspect of our lives that meet this conditions

So, among few people with equivalent balanced knowledge of a topic and time to make a decision they could willingly limit their freedom an adopt a law for that will apply to themselves (or others agreeing to be subject to this law without having decided it.)

But at this point majority is a stupid (mass vote inherited) concept because among, educated people on a subject, everyone will converge to a solution at time.

The way I see it, democracy is only usable in some cases like jury in trials were everyone agreed to the rules.

But anyway the first step for some kind of "better world" would be to recognize and understand natural law. (which is the foundation stone of human relationship)
