Today's trip into the shop I am doing some sanding and beveling on some blades. This is the next step in my knife making process. I have been doing a step by step video series, and I am excited to get this blade all ready!
Well, I am actually making this post after I have done the work. In the video I sound pretty optimistic, and in real life I got a bit of a butt kicking haha. It turns out that yesterday when I was using the file I was gouging the steel. This is terrible and I didn't see it until I started to sand today.
So it took some effort and elbow grease to get those gouges out of the metal. I was really excited about getting the bevels put on, but dang, you have to pay attention to the details. I have made many knives and can honestly say that there is always something that pops up.
I have several different grits for sanding today. I start with 60, then I move up to 100 and 150 etc. I actually bought all the way up to 1200, but that will be once everything is all hardened and finishing up.
I did have to use the same file to make the bevels today, but I made sure to watch the scratches and get them sanded out quickly. I actually found that using a file to create the bevels was alot more control than using a belt sander, but man, if I had a 1x30 belt sander I would have gotten back inside alot sooner!
I hope you are all enjoying my progress and this video series. I would love to hear from you in the comments below!
Be well
