It is time to get the freshly annealed steel pieces out of the ashes, and clean them up!
So that is what I am getting into today is cleaning up the steel from the annealing video. The last knife making video I made was heating the steel pieces and putting them into the wood ash to cool. Well, that was on Friday, and it is now Sunday.
I started with getting the 7 pieces out of the ash and just knocking them off and giving them a visual inspection. They all looked amazing and ready to go. Since my heating and cooling process was different than I am used to, these guys looked REALLY good!
There is a thing refered to a decarb which will cause scales to form on the surface of the steel. This is having to do with the carbon inside the steel and the process and materials used to heat treat it.
Today I am walking through a couple of these points, and then jumping right in with a grinding session. I hope you enjoy this step of the process. Full disclosure, when I finished making this video the steel started speaking to me, and I actually have my first new knife all profiled and surface filed! Next will be bevels...haha I couldn't help myself.
Be well
