I am having such a great time with this build. It is a pretty huge knife, and the handle is huge and comfortable. I am sharing today a bit about how I finished the wood.
I started with the stabilized maple wood and glued it to the blue G10 liners. Once I got the scales paired up and the end that is against the blade shaped out, I got them glued to the blade. I am also using the 3/16" stainless steel rod for pins.
I started today by shaping the handle using the angle grinder. It let's me really eat away at the material quickly. It lets me take it into shape and get everything flush. So the steel and the liners and the scales will all be the same level and start to bring the look together.
I moved on to hand sanding starting with a 60 grit. I worked it all the way up to a 500 grit with tung oil. So it has a wet sanded finish. Not only that...but I did something a little fun with it...I burned it. I love the rough look and the art of it. So I used a hand torch and blazed both sides. Once it had the look I wanted I finished up with the 220 and 500 grit with the oil.
I really love this handle and I am happy with how it turned out. I think this guy is going to be really excited about it too. I love that I get to share my craft with everyone either through knife orders or posts about it. I hope you all enjoying my adventure and look forward to hearing from you.
