Whoa! Today I am jumping in with the idea of Digital Double Talk. The idea that someone can say something via text on a social media, but then say that they didn't actually mean what they said, or that everyone will just understand it differently.
This morning I was witness to Stacie D (@freedomtowrite) trying to give constructive criticism to a community that she is a part of. There were some things said, and some real things implied, and Stacie D just called a spade a spade...but it didn't end like that.
I know that she was trying to speak about how the community could grow by not actually alienating a group of people that was currently being spoken ill of. It wasn't even that she was jumping to their defense, but she was more calling out the poor way that the leadership was categorizing them.
Needless to say she was moderated and told to drop the issue. For me to see that sort of thing makes me laugh. I have always had a theory about people being tough guys behind a keyboard, but if you give them any sort of role somewhere like a moderator of a discord community...crap, now they have real power.....that's sarcasm.
What I witnessed today was just another example of how social media isn't real. You can't just mute people. You can't just tell people to drop something and move on. You can't just act like you have any kind of power over someone, or the ability to tell others what to do.
I think when it comes to an sort of community, especially on the Steem blockchain, you have to watch what the leadership is doing. What are they saying, and how are they being toward people.
Stacie D and I are founders of Inner Blocks. It is a business/community that is building on the blockchain and is focused on real people and real experiences. So definitely watch what we are doing. Are we being rude to people? I don't think so. Are we calling someone names? For sure not. Do we talk down to anyone? No that's rude. Do we call out bull crap as we see it? For sure.
I think it is important to still be able to stand up for what you believe and how you feel, but we have to factor in the tact to do it. Not that it is all political, but you can really tell what kind of person someone is by the way they treat someone they don't need.
I hope you all have an amazing day,and aren't the subject of someone's Digital Double Talk.
Be well
