So the latest update on the chicken coop build is an instant chicken yard! Thanks for joining me today as I am talking a big about some amazing free fencing!
As I have been building this recycled chicken coop, I have also been planning out the yard that they chickens will be in. Since it is in a very large back yard I can't let them just free range, or they will eat up my garden! So the idea was to build them a chicken run that is large enough that they will have fresh places to scratch, shade, and cover.
Today, I went on an errand with The Dreamer, and she and I picked up four more totes full of beautiful composting mulch. While we were out at this guy's homestead I started to notice things that he had just "laying around". I found a huge roll of fencing!!!
After a bit of negotiation we ended up leaving with the role of fencing, and some PVC pipe that I will turn into the feeder. This should work great as a through the wall feeder.
This was no easy task getting this stuff home. I had already put all of the totes in the side door of the van, so the space was limited. It was like a professional wrestling match. I was bobbing and weaving, and at one point I think I gave that role a belly to back suplex....and I still couldn't get it in the van.
So, after about ten minutes of not winning, I decided to put two of the totes up in the seat and then shove the roll in. It ended up sticking out of the side door, but I couldn't figure out any other way to get it in. Since it was only sticking out maybe a foot, I used a ratchet tie down strap to hold it in....and we drove home with the door open hahaha.
Once we got it back by the chicken coop, it was an "all hands on deck" situation. Everyone started pushing and pulling and running the fence. We decided to start near the coop and then run it down through the trees, back to the outer fence, up to the shed, and then across to the chicken coop. It was the perfect size for what I was imagining. BOOM! Instant Chicken Run!
The next step is going to be fitting the feeder into place and then run some small chicken wire around the bottom of the coop. After that...CHICKENS!
