An unboxing! I love doing an unboxing. I have just received a surprise gift from Stacie D (@freedomtowrite). Apparently she has been asking me questions on the sly and then slipping around and ordering things. In this case, it is not for Christmas, but something that I really want/need.
I have been working knives in the shop, and I have only made two knives in all my years that was not repurposed material. I made a bushcraft knife and a small pocket knife out of D2 steel. All of the rest have been made out of steel that I have found and repurposed.
I am currently making knives from a large sawblade. It had resurfaced here on the farm, and now I am making it into knives. The thing about using this type of material is that you have to roll with it. You never really know what characteristics the steel will have. Most of the time there is a good amount of rust, and it pits the blade.
So the other day Stacie D was asking alot of questions about different types of steels. She was asking some pretty direct questions, and was really putting me on like she wanted to learn. Turns out she was trying to get the info from me for some good steel, so she could order it.
She spilled the beans the day when I was fretting about not having steel. I had just filled an order, and the person ordered a second knife. I told him that I would get back with him when I had some better steel. So when I was sharing this with Stacie D she just smiled and said that something was coming in the mail for me.
It turns out that this beautiful woman had ordered 5160 spring steel for me, and was going to surprise me with it so I could make the knives that I wanted to make. I am over the top excited about being able to use new steel to create with. Stay tuned for more projects and amazing blades.
Be well
