Last night was a pretty amazing experience. I slept really awesome, and had some amazing dreams. One of those dreams included one of my close long time friends. So first thing this morning I reached out to him, because that's what friends do.
I started thinking about relationships....real relationships. What do they look like. Do I know anyone with them. Do I have any in my life. What would it take to make one. Now here I am talking about it.
I think that a real relationship is based on effort. Time, effort and energy. There are alot of times we may be in some sort of a relationship, maybe a family or a friend, and we find that time has caused distance between us. It is when we see the gap that we apply the effort.
I have may family members that have moved from family to acquaintance. Meaning that just because we share the same blood it doesn't mean that we are any closer than someone I might meet anywhere else.
The way to change that is effort. To put the time into actually making connects and supporting bonds between people. To encourage phone calls, texts, video calls, letters...actual connection.
The same thing could be said for friendships. You may have a friend that you have been friends with since you were just small kids. Maybe they were from primary school, middle school, high school or even college. You have a head full of memories, but you aren't really as close to that person any more.
Maybe people like to say that it feels like years can go by and when they see each other again it is like there was no time at all. That may be the case for some people, but not for me.
I see real relationships as something different. When time passes and distance is created, we are literally growing apart. Life is happening. People are getting married, having kids, doing amazing things in their lives...and we are missing that all. They are becoming amazing people that we don't even know.
So when we come back together with them all we actually share is memories. Sure it is fun to hang out, but is it a real relationship?! I'm not sure. I know that many people may see this differently than I do, and that may be because of my personality. All I know is that I am usually the first to recognize the gap and I am always the first to jump across it to make contact.
Maybe it is just through my life of experience, but I firmly believe that if I saw the gap and didn't do anything...there would be a whole lot of people that don't jump the gap for me. That's ok they because I am sure they had something else going on haha. So don't be afraid to be the one to make the first move!
Be well
