A lot of people are contemplating about going into the business world because they have certain fears and myths about business. It is true that being an entrepreneur means you need a lot of attributes and qualities but it doesn’t mean you have to be an alien or a superhero to start a business or succeed as an entrepreneur. There is nothing that beats business practical, so entrepreneurs learn most of their shortcomings as they go on doing their business.
In other to correct a lot of wrong thoughts as well as debunk several myths about starting business, I have decided to write this post;
I have heard a lot of people say that you cannot become an entrepreneur or start an entrepreneurship journey because they are above 60 years or they are too young to become an entrepreneur. This is wrong as a lot of entrepreneurs started their businesses at an old age while some started at a young age. Colonel Sanders, the man who invented Kentucky Fried Chicken, at 64 years old began selling his secret formula to franchisees. Ray Kroc, at 52 years bought four hamburger restaurants in California and that started the McDonald’s empire. On the younger side, Michael Dell started his first business at the age of 13 years. Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook founded Facebook at the age of 19 years.
As a prospective entrepreneur, you need to know that age is not a determinant to start and run a business.
Truthfully having enough capital when starting a business makes it easy but it doesn’t determine the success of the business. Most startup entrepreneurs with lots of money usually waste the money while beginning on needless office equipment, expensive facilities not facing the business fully. It is advisable to start a business small so as to understand the business as well as make little mistakes that can be corrected. It’s actually beneficial to create a business with as little money as possible as you will start to learn the business flaws at low risks compared to putting large amount of money. To backup this argument, a lot of the big companies like Apple, Amazon, Disney, and Hewlett Packard started their business from their garage. Your ability to make money from little or no money makes you a good entrepreneur as people that can’t make money without money usually won’t make money with money.
It is a normal thing to feel rejected but one thing you need to understand is that the path to prosperity is paved with rejection. A lot of successful entrepreneurs have failed so many times but they tend to succeed because they keep trying. Instead of giving up, successful entrepreneurs deal with failure and adversity after which they move on.
Do you know that several people who studied business administration have failed in handling business? Education does not determine business success although it some case, it can make it easier to understand simple calculations but doesn’t determine success. At the same time, entrepreneurial experience does not determine success in business. Steven Jobs and Stephen Wozniak, who founded Apple after dropping out of college, they did not have any entrepreneurial experience. This does not mean that education or experience is not needed to start or run the affairs of a business but it is not a yardstick to starting a business.
I will be drawing the curtain here so the post remains at a moderate length.
I will appreciate your comments, please keep them coming.
