LEGEND PORTADA.png

There is nothing better than playing a game of the beat'em up genre to de-stress a little and the amount of games of this type is quite absurd, in its heyday, any video game developer did his, as this was quite common in a time where the arcade machines were very fashionable and later moved to home consoles, even today you still see this kind of games, logically not as often as it was before. Over the years I have made several reviews of games of this genre, some of them being spectacular gems, others are simpler but effective and others are really quite forgettable. Today I will talk about one that despite not being anything spectacular, I have to admit that I was quite entertained, perhaps because it had been a while since I played a game of the beat'em up genre, but despite that it is one of those games that although they fail to innovate in anything with respect to the best of its genre, it is still a title that manages to fulfill its main objective.

Therefore today's Retro Review is about: Legend.

As you can never miss in this type of games, the story focuses on the endless battle between good and evil and the salvation of a kingdom. Beldor which was a villain who was ruling for 1000 years, was causing chaos, death and destruction throughout his time. Many warriors went to battle to try to stop him but all their efforts were in vain, as they were unfortunately destroyed quite easily. However, there is no evil that lasts forever, so several kingdoms joined forces and managed to seal the soul of Beldor. But since peace is not infinite and war must come again, Baldor's son Clovis plans to use his father's power to conquer the kingdom again. So this time in order to stop once and for all the chaos and evil, two heroes embark on a dangerous and difficult mission in which they will have to fight against immense hordes of enemies before they can achieve their ultimate goal.

Legend is a SNES game with a pretty decent graphic aspect set in medieval times, so you can see many aspects and characteristic elements of that era, as well as aspects of other games that use this same setting, so we can see places like castles, bridges, forests, caves, villages, each with its characteristic and decorative elements, as this game also presents a variety of scenarios, something that is appreciated because repeating the same scenarios is quite boring for any type of video game. Although one of the aspects that is repeated enough in this game is the design of the enemies and that if tends to get quite boring, although to add a positive point to this game with respect to this game, I must say that the sprites of the characters have a fairly large size, so you can appreciate very well the characteristic details of each enemy, especially in the design of our main characters, which logically are the ones that stand out more on screen.

Although in terms of design, what stands out most on screen are the final bosses of each stage, since they have an even larger size than normal enemies, they manage to look even better on screen, many of these designs are quite typical and have been seen in hundreds of games of this style, but even so it should be mentioned that these have excellent designs and good details. The characters have some fluidity of movement, not something spectacular, but good enough for a game of the beat'em up genre, which is very important for a proper gaming experience. Perhaps a negative aspect is that the screen size is a bit small, although that may be due to the large size of the character sprites on screen, and that you can see up to 5 characters on screen (including our main character) without any slowdown problem.

It had been a long time since I found a game whose soundtrack is totally bad, and it's not because the music is badly composed or sounds bad, in fact quite the opposite, the main theme is quite good, but it's that they repeat it so much throughout this adventure that it becomes quite annoying, boring and even stressful to have to listen again to this soundtrack and it's a shame, because if they had made the effort to make other types of music that were on par with the main theme, this soundtrack would be pretty good, because as I said before, the main theme is very good. The sound effects on the other hand, if they are okay, they are normal, nothing spectacular but they manage to fulfill their purpose.

LEGEND Playlist OST

Legend, as I said before, is a game of the beat'em up genre and although instead of using our fists to eliminate our enemies, we use swords, it still maintains the same elements of the beat'em up genre games, although perhaps because of this it could be considered a "hack and slash", but because you can not perform attack combos, I think it does not fall into that category as such. Although this game does not really innovate anything in terms of its mechanics and in many of its elements as the best of its genre, in general terms Legend is a really entertaining game and all this is due to its simple but effective character control, since Legend presents a fairly simple gameplay, so in the first seconds of gameplay we can have optimal control over the skills of our character.

It is not a difficult game, since its difficulty curve adjusts very well as we advance through the different phases that this game presents and as we learn the attack pattern of our enemies. One of the negative aspects of this game is that perhaps for some players the mobility of our character may prove to be a little slow and perhaps that is because as mentioned above the screen of each stage is a little small compared to other similar games. For the rest, Legend is a game that maintains all the basic characteristics of a game of the beat'em up genre, which are to advance through a series of scenarios full of enemies, defeat them and advance to the next scene of the scenario, repeat the same thing several times until you reach the final boss of each scenario, defeat him and advance to the next scenario which will be different from the previous one. So simple, but it turns out to be effective or at least it was at the time, because perhaps for today's times, making a beat'em up as simple as this is something quite monotonous.

But in general terms Legend is a good game, which is not the best of its style nor is it as good as the best of its genre, but in the end it is a very entertaining product to have a good time destroying enemies.
