GEX PORTADA.png

Yesterday I published the sequel of a game which I didn't know it was exactly a sequel, that game is Gex, a 3D platform game quite entertaining and conventional, whose main attraction, besides that we can control a lizard that is going to releasing funny phrases, is a game where we are transported to a world full of references to film and television. So after having played its sequel "Enter the Gecko", I decided to play the first game of this trilogy, which unlike its two sequels, this first game is made entirely in 2D, but still maintains the premise of traveling between television worlds, based on different genres. So without further ado.

Today's Retro Review is about: GEX.

The story of this game begins when GEX was watching television, exactly like in the second game, since watching television could be said to be the vice of our protagonist. You can see at the beginning of the cinematic a kind of robot fly that passes in front of GEX and he devours it without knowing that it is a transmitter, so the next thing we see is the villain of this saga, Rez, which is in its "Media Dimension" and followed this pierces with his hand a screen that leads to the room where GEX is watching television, This claw traps him and takes our protagonist to the television dimension, where he must now overcome a large number of levels, defeat enemies, collect the necessary items and defeat the main villain of this saga to escape. A story as simple as the first but after playing it I started to investigate a little about this game and it turns out that Gex's family came to Hawaii with his parents and siblings, his father who worked at NASA died in an accident along with his colleagues, because of this is when the vice of GEX begins to watch television compulsively to relieve the pain of the loss of his father. After several events that happen to GEX and his family after the death of his father, GEX starts living on the street, but then he and his family inherit a lot of money, move back to Hawaii, buy a mansion and a giant television and then everything that I detailed at the beginning happens. This is not really something that affects or matters, but I found it quite interesting how the creators took the trouble to create a background for this character's vice with television.

GEX is a game that was ported for different platforms, I exactly played the version for PlayStation 1 and is a game that graphically looks pretty good, as mentioned above, this first game is made entirely in 2D and I think it is a game that has aged quite well over the years, the scenarios have very good details and themed, like its sequel, ie, depending on the scenario in which we find ourselves we can see both elements, decorations and different enemies. Going from elements of horror, comedy, adventure, cartoon, exactly like its sequel, this being one element that was maintained and that really was done quite well. Because it is a 2D game unlike its sequel the details in the scenarios have better quality in both details and art.

The design of GEX is very good, enjoys very good and varied animations which manage to represent very well the personality and charisma of this character, as well as the enemies of each scenario are made according to the scenario and place in which we find ourselves, so there will be no enemy that is repeated according to the theme of the level in which we find ourselves. Personally I liked the music in this game much more than in its sequel, I thought it was better composed, better set according to the scenario in which we find ourselves and with a better variety. The sound effects also stand out a lot and contribute a lot to give personality to this game, as well as the voice lines of GEX which are not too many, but are very well done and fit very well with the charisma of this character.

GEX is a fairly conventional platform game, so it is a fairly simple game and whose difficulty is not so high, however this does not mean that it is a boring game, but quite the opposite, because despite its simplicity in terms of gameplay this is a very fun game, because the stage design is very well done which gives us a variety of very unique and fun situations. GEX as is common in many of these games can jump, run, but can also hit enemies with his tail, you can use it to break certain obstacles that we have in our way and also serves to activate switches, you can also use your tongue as a weapon "distance". But undoubtedly one of its greatest attractions is that because our protagonist is a lizard it can climb up the walls, this gives us a fairly wide freedom of movement unlike other platform games, since many of the levels it is necessary to use this mechanics to overcome them, which makes it quite fun. Beyond that, GEX maintains the main approach of the games of this genre, move in a horizontal scroll environment and at times vertically, collect items that help us both to restore our life or items that allow us to unlock the next level, reach the end of the level and beat their respective final boss. Simple but effective and above all entertaining.
