It's been almost two months or I think exactly two months since the last time I did a Retro Review, since I hadn't been playing many retro games, but I'm back again with a review of one of my favorite genres of video games and it is of course, a beat 'em up, a genre that never gets old, since it is always very entertaining to face a horde of enemies in the purest style of "me against the neighborhood". The game I'm going to talk about today was based on an old manga about street fights, so the plot of this manga is perfect for the adaptation of a video game.
That's why today's Retro Review is about: Crows: The Battle Action.
I will skip the section explaining the story of this game, because for a game of the beat 'em up genre, I have always considered that the story is quite irrelevant, since I do not think that people seek and are interested in a beat 'em up for its plot (although there are games of this genre that have very good story as Guardian Heroes) but personally, when I want to play a beat 'em up is exclusively to deliver kicks and punches to my enemies, but anyway and returning to the theme of the graphics aspect.
Crows: The Battle Action maintains a style called "chibi" or also called "super deformed", where the characters are represented with characteristics such as small bodies and large heads, thus maintaining a "childish" style, although the beatings we inflict on our enemies have nothing childish. Therefore, as this game has such a characteristic and striking style, it is totally different from its manga counterpart, since its pages present a more serious and realistic style, although despite these differences Crows: The Battle Action maintains part of the essence of the manga and really looks quite good graphically, with very striking character designs and with good effects and details in their sprites.
In addition, the scenery and set design are very good and manage to represent locations that can be seen in the manga. This is also a game with a very striking color palette, so it stands out quite a bit on screen. The visual effects and animations are also well done and have a certain level of fluidity necessary for a game of this style.
When I discovered this game and learned that it was based on a manga whose story focuses on student street fights, I immediately knew how its soundtrack would be and when I started playing I could quickly notice that I was right, since the soundtrack of this game is made almost entirely of rock music, heavy music and with very fast rhythms, this being an aspect that fits perfectly with the plot of this game and of course, with the beat 'em up genre, where we are constantly in a cycle of action and violence. In addition, its sound effects are also very good, contributing a lot to the atmosphere of the scenarios, as well as expressiveness to the fights and situations that we will see in this adventure.
Crows: The Battle Action, as I mentioned before is a beat 'em up but it was classic, very entertaining and with a control over our character quite easy to learn. In terms of beat 'em up games, this one in particular is not out of the most classic and basic of the genre, but even so, because its mechanics are so well done, it is even more fun than others that tried to innovate with new elements, but in the end were not as memorable or as in the case of this particular game, as fun as this one is.
At the beginning of the game we will be able to choose between two playable characters (we can also play with a partner) after defeating the first two final bosses, they will join us and we will be able to control them and thus have a total of four characters to choose from. Crows: The Battle Action is a game with a difficulty curve not so high, but it is not a game that is very difficult, in addition, it is a game that becomes comfortable to control our character thanks to its comfortable controls and its ability to perform combos, which can be configured at the beginning of each game. A classic beat 'em up game where our main purpose is to advance through the scenarios and defeat all those enemies that try to stop our way.
Crows: The Battle Action is a fairly classic game, but despite that and that it does not innovate too much in its mechanical aspects, it is due to that good set of controls and movements of our characters, plus a good response to the buttons is what makes this game quite entertaining. In addition, with its "childish" anime aesthetics, its bright colors and highly decorated scenarios, it is a game that looks excellent on screen.
