Today I want to tell you from my experience (nothing professional) how I started the process of complementary feeding with my daughter Camila, as I have already told in other posts Camila has always been a good eater but I didn't know this until I started to give her her first bites.
First of all I started when I felt she was ready, generally and it is the most recommended to start at 6 months, however Camila at about 5 and a half months gave me some signs, she put her hand in the food, drooled, made as if she was chewing, opened and closed her hands when I put an object or food in her hand and tried to take it to her mouth.
I decided to consult with her pediatrician and when she saw these signs, she authorized me to do so. It was just a few days before she was 6 months old, but I was very sad to see her eating and seeing her like that (eye on me) until the wonderful day arrived.
I know that nowadays there are many ways to start complementary feeding such as the BLW method where we offer the food in pieces of a suitable size so that the baby begins to experience textures and sensory development.
But I started in a traditional way with soups haha first because I was afraid she would choke and not know what to do and secondly she had never eaten anything solid so I started in a basic way, I bought some vegetables and the first one I offered her was pumpkin soup just as her pediatrician explained it to me, a small amount that was a little thick, without salt and with chives only the white part of the branch. I repeated this soup for 3 days to make sure he liked it and that he did not have an allergic reaction.
I only offered food at lunch time and a fruit snack at 4:00 the rest of the day was breastfeeding and water. After trying the same soup for 3 days, I started with another vegetable (celery) and so on until I tried different vegetables such as okra, yam, zucchini. Camila once offered all the different vegetable soups started to be selective with the ones she liked and the ones she didn't, discarding the pumpkin soup.
When he turned 6 months old I started to implement the BlW method offering him healthy foods, avocado, broccoli, carrot strips, potato chunks, banana and fruits like banana, strawberries, mango, all these were approved by his palate I must say that he liked them very much and ate tasty as they say here in Venezuela haha.
At 7 months I added grains (beans) beans and lentils to be specific, I also offered egg at that age I decided to do it at this age with the same methodology offering for at least 2 days the same food to rule out any allergic reaction. At one year of age Camila was already eating all these foods including chicken, fish and meat (little) and could even eat the same as us.
The truth is that watching her eat was a pleasure, but I must confess that she was one of my favorites in her baby stage, as you could notice I didn't want to give her everything in the same month but little by little adding a new food until she tried a variety of foods. Thank God no food gave him an allergic reaction but I did discard some that he didn't like and stopped offering them frequently, but every once in a while I incorporated them again and he got used to eating them.
Thank God I had excellent advice from her pediatrician and this stage was spectacular and helped me to keep her at a healthy and ideal weight for her and super healthy, I always recommend that you consult with your pediatrician to start this stage you can choose the way you want to feed your babies either the traditional way or BLW method but if respecting and understanding that it is a new stage for them to experience with patience and love they will love this stage as I enjoyed it 🥰.
Thank you once again for reading me, I am happy to tell you my adventures and experiences of my stage as a mom 🥰 a hug happy night to everyone ☺️💕
