I started to think of an adjective to describe a series I just watched, in the company of my boyfriend. My realistic and less sentimental sense would describe it as "corny", but the truth is that it is endearing, incredible, simple and very emotional. Perhaps because many of us homosexuals did not have the opportunity to live a story like this in our adolescence, perhaps because some part of us wished to live the normality portrayed in this story.
I hadn't watched a series with my boyfriend in a while, lately we don't have that much time to enjoy a marathon. But, every time gay content comes out I rush to see what the story is about. This time it was no less, I had heard great things about this series. At first it seemed to me, another teen drama of those that Netflix likes to produce.
I must say that it has been a pleasant surprise to find a modern production, incredibly well told and with an incredible sense in these times. If that still doesn't convince you, I tell you that one of the things I loved the most was the presence of Olivia Colman, that great British actress whose role as Queen Elizabeth in The Crown earned her a Golden Globe. One more award among her vast collection of accolades that includes an Oscar.
Heartstopper is a British series released on Netflix last April 22. Originally, it was a web comic, created by Alice Oseman, a comic based on the difficulties of a group of teenagers in high school. Bullying, harassment, transphobia, homophobia and taboos about gender identity are some of the issues this series deals with.
It is not as blatant as Sex Education, far from it. Although it still manages that kind of sequence that English productions usually have, innovative, transgressive and unforgettable, but adapted for a more mass audience. With a well cared script, with scenes arriving at the right moment and an unparalleled chemistry between its protagonists, Heartstopper has given me everything I didn't expect to get.
Charlie Spring (Joe Locke) is back in school after Christmas break. This time someone is waiting for him: Ben Hope (Sebastian Croft) a boy he is dating, but who forces him to keep their relationship a secret, as he has not yet come out of the closet. Already in class, she is assigned a new seat next to a popular Rugby player named Nick Nelson (Kit Connor). Immediately, Charlie falls for the charms of the handsome Nick.
Charlie has his own gang, Tao (William Gao) and Isaac (Tobie Donovan), two straight guys quite different from each other who advise him not to fall in love with the high school male delusion. But Charlie, gets to meet Nick a seemingly different guy than the one they all knew on the rugby field.
The fourth member of the clan is named Elle (Yasmin Finney), but she is separated from the group after she begins her transition to become a woman and yes, this school separates its students by gender. Elle struggles to fit in at the new all-girls high school, but fails to connect with the others. Until Tara Jones (Corinna Brown) and Darcy Olsson (Kizzy Edgell) two self-confessed and very crazy lesbians arrive.
Meanwhile, Charlie wants to take his place from Usain Bolt and seems to be an expert runner, Nick notices his skills and invites him to join the rugby team. The two begin to spend time together, but Charlie continues his relationship with Ben, until he realizes that Ben is dating a girl; Charlie decides to end his relationship with Ben. Ben goes crazy and tries to kiss Charlie by force, but Nick finds them and defends Charlie from the aggressor.
Nick spends most of the season in a process of discovery and acceptance of his sexuality, while he falls in love with Charlie and begins to deal with the taboos and prejudices of society. Will they manage to find the way to happiness for both of them?
My boyfriend and I, we came to the conclusion that Heartstopper is a pretty small series, but with an incredible message. Actors-wise, it's teenagers playing teenagers, but they're all fine in their roles. The story was what mattered after all.
A perfect script, embellished by an animation that makes it digestible for any audience. It's all act for everyone, in fact, feelings are represented, through stars, flowers and hearts. There is no sex, no racy scenes and adults do not interfere much in the lives of the students.
On the other hand, we have the wonderful story of Elle, a beautiful trans girl who is transferred from school, after starting her transition and her story with Tao is one of the warmest things I've seen. Because after spending her whole life surrounded by boys she suddenly has to deal with other women, plus I don't remember ever seeing a trans teenager on TV.
Heartstopper is a series based on a love story, but it's not her love story that's the most beautiful thing about it, let's make it redundant. Although it's about first love and does it well, it's endearing, relatable and emotional. We also have fantastic characters like Mr. Ajayi (Fisayo Akinade), an amazing teacher who helps Charlie defend himself from bullying.
However, I think Heartstopper is perfect for parents. First, because the parents, even though they are secondary characters in the script, provide the most wonderful moments within the plot. The sexual orientation of their children, is not above how much they love them and that's something that doesn't usually happen in real life. Definitely, for this and much more, it is already for me one of the best things I've seen this year and I recommend it.
