1919 had been a difficult year after the pandemic, but Claudia's father constantly traveled to the city in a carriage in which she felt like a princess in spite of her shortcomings, that daily event constituted the only time of the day in which she could have contact with the outside world. Leaving Hortensia her favorite cow had been a very sad event the first few times, but the city noise and the people had convinced her that great adventures awaited her in that concrete world.
Always accustomed to the labors of the countryside, her face was always blushing, perfectly matching that innocent look and the fresh smile that was drawn on her mouth. The first thing they always did was to take fresh fruit to La Salle High School, the most exclusive in the city in those days, which is why her father had been able to get her a scholarship to study there after so many trips.
That Monday would be her first day of classes, so dressed in her grandmother's old tracksuit she got ready for that special event. But her happiness would be short-lived, as she soon discovered that the school was ruled by a bunch of stuck-up girls who didn't even turn to look at her. On the contrary, her means of transportation had meant the mockery of many of her classmates and the scorn of the male members, which is why Claudia had taken refuge in the noble care of Eustaquia, the mother superior.
To her surprise a handsome boy of Italian origin would take notice of her, he had arrived in the country after the first World War and saw in her a very special candidate to be his friend. However, Claudia had doubted his true intentions since she was not close to being one of the circle of friends that Giuseppe, as that handsome Neapolitan boy was called, frequented.
But love always has its wiles and Giuseppe had found in Claudia a girl different from the rest and his evenings were spent with her, before his stubborn father tried unsuccessfully to forbid their meetings. With several jealous people on his side, Giuseppe managed to circumvent the fence that prevented him from seeing his beloved and Claudia, who would end up in trouble not once but several times, managed to manage.
And so the days went by until one day Giuseppe's family decided to leave the city forever. The fate of the lovers was in the hands of third parties and despite the attempts to be accepted by the families of both, the two knew very well that neither side would give in to what they considered a youthful whim. So, fearing to be separated, they ran to the first municipal registry office they could find and together with their cousin Clara, who by then was of legal age, they signed a civil union to join their lives forever.
Not even the depression of 1929 could separate them, together they managed to be accepted by their families and from their relationship was born the scientific work for which they would be known years later: the study of plantations and productive soils. No one can separate us from our destinies, when something is for you it will be for you without forcing an iota.
As铆 pasar铆an los d铆as hasta que la familia de Giuseppe un buen d铆a, decidi贸 marcharse para siempre de aquella ciudad.
